Warts and verrucas - NHS

It’s possible to have between one and several hundred plane warts, which can develop in clusters. They are usually:Verrucae are most commonly seen in children, teenagers and young adults - largely those who use communal changing rooms. It is possible to develop an immunity against the virus over time but most people remain susceptible, although some more than others. How do I know I have them? On balance it is usually only worth treating a wart or verruca if it is troublesome. For example, if it is painful or you find it ugly and conspicuous. What are the treatment options? The HPV virus is thought to thrive in moist, damp environments such as swimming pools, changing room floors and communal shower areas. It is possible to contract verrucae simply by walking across the same floor area as someone with a verruca, especially if you have any small or invisible cuts or abrasions that make it easier for the virus to penetrate. Who gets them?

How should I get rid of a verruca or wart? - BBC - Home

In the first instance, avoid touching or scratching a verruca as it may spread into a cluster of warts. Instead, cover it up with a plaster. Evidence suggests that, in many cases, verrucae will disappear of their own accord, within six months for children but taking longer for adults (up to two years). This is because the body’s immune system recognises the presence of the virus and fights the infection naturally but it can take many months for this to happen. If it is painless, no treatment may be required as some treatments can be painful, especially for children, and can cause side-effects. If the surrounding skin does become sore, stop the treatment for a few days until it settles. Then re-start treatment. There is also a small risk that you may get a skin allergy to the treatment. If this occurs, the surrounding skin becomes red and itchy. Bazuka Gel, Bazuka Treatment Gel & Bazuka Extra Strength Gel are for the treatment of verrucas, warts, corns and calluses. Bazuka Extra Strength Treatment Gel, Bazuka Sub-Zero and Bazuka Advance Treatment Pen are for the treatment of verrucas and warts. Bazuka Gels contain salicylic acid. Bazuka Advance Treatment Pen contains formic acid. Bazuka Advance Treatment Pen is a medical device. Bazuka Sub-Zero is a medical device based on the cryotherapy 'freezing' technique used by doctors. Always read the label.

Salicylates should be given with caution to breast-feeding mothers because of the possible risk of Reye’s syndrome in nursing infants and there is no data on the use of topical salicylic acid in breast feeding women. Therefore the use of this product during pregnancy is contraindicated. Not to be used in patients who are hypersensitive to salicylic acid (or other NSAIDs) or to any excipients in section 6.1

The length of time it takes for a wart to disappear will vary from person to person. It can take up to 2 years for the virus to leave your system and for warts to disappear. Warts tend to last longer in older children and adults.
