About this deal

Raphael Fernández is a “ trash boy”: he’s 14 years old and he lives in a shanty on a giant landfill called Behala, spending his days collecting trash to sell for food. Raphael works with his best friend, Gardo, who looks after him. Behala’s residents mostly collect plastic, clean paper, and rags to sell by the kilogram. Since not many people in their city have toilets, human feces—or, stupp—ends up wrapped in paper and thrown in the trash, which is what most of Behala’s residents spend their days wading in as they dig out garbage with their feet or hooks that they fashion out of metal. The name is derived from the fact that the two million tonnes of waste, when in the process of decomposition, creates too high temperature that the mountain appears to be smoking or in fire. I had no chance to be there but my Sociology professor in the 80's told us in class that the houseflies were as big as dragonflies. Andy Mulligan is an English writer best known for young adult fiction. His work is strongly influenced by his experiences working as a volunteer in Calcutta, India, and as an English and drama teacher in Brazil, Vietnam, the Philippines, and the UK. He has been married to UK television presenter Anne Robinson since their elopement in 2015.

Trash is a thriller with moral weight and a complex structure . . . Without ever moralising, Mulligan raises issues of corruption, poverty, waste and excess in an exciting, but also grimly sad tale Suzi Feay, Financial Times Return to Ribblestrop (2011) was the first of two Ribblestrop sequels. Mulligan won the 2011 Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, a once-in-a-lifetime book award judged by a panel of British children's writers. [1] [5] "It is so fresh: the judges loved its anarchy, its good humour, its warm heart and the way it depicted children," according to committee chair Julia Eccleshare, children's book editor Exciting and fast moving as the story is, it also tugs at your heartstrings and reminds the reader that there are many young people for whom this way of life is reality. Unmissable! Pat Tate, CarouselSo, am I garbage? the garbage boy had just lied his way out from under the noses of those clever men. A little garbage boy had sat there shaking, saying, ‘I don’t have the bag,’ when all the time I knew exactly where it was and what had been in it. The garbage boys were way ahead of the garbage police, and I had said nothing to those men."

Towards the end of the book Mulligan inserted several newspaper clippings to move the story forward; they were distracting and unnecessary, and appear to be a one-time-only use of this literary device. Why did he bother? Oh well. Wonderful - an exciting story with engaging characters told in a clever way with spare but lyrical prose . . . Trash comes highly recommended by me, and I don't have time to say any more about it because I'm off to read it again. And after that, I might read it again. And then again.
