About this deal
On to taste, the heart of any whisky. The Lagavulin 16 came out slightly ahead against the 8’s. While the Lagavulin 8 does bring a delightful balance of smoky, sweet, and citrusy notes, I found the depth and complexity of the 16 more engaging. The layers of smoky sweetness, intertwined with deep-sea salty notes, created a narrative in each sip that fascinated me.

The distillery ran a two day working week until the 1980s, which has resulted in some problems meeting the high demand for their whisky over the years. A touch of vanilla and toffee gives this malt a sweet base and the big maritime saltiness is very obvious here as well. Again, very meaty and savoury. Bitter lemon peels and limes. Earthy peat and some minerality. The mouthfeel is quite creamy as well. A 20cl bottling of the Lagavulin 12 Year Old launched for Diageo's Special Releases 2023, a whisky finished in Don Julio Añejo Tequila casks. It was bottled at 56.4% ABV.
Lagavulin always bottles something for the Islay Jazz Festival and 2018 was no exception. This one was matured in first-fill American oak barrels, refill American oak hogsheads, and European oak puncheons. Whiskybase B.V. The aroma is distinctive, filled with smoky sweetness, traces of fresh citrus, and subtle grassy notes. The finish, though not as long as its elder sibling Lagavulin 16, is satisfyingly warm and lingering. Lagavulin seems to be involved in some sort of reverse age-statement arms race (with who?). The classic 16 year Lagavulin was on everyone’s lips in, oh, 2010, and then a cask-strength 12 year-old dropped (for like a Benjamin) in 2017. Now, an 8 year at a somewhat elevated 48% ABV.
