The arpeggiator has all the standard arpeggio directions plus a few twists (up, down, and/or sideways, sort of). There's also a built-in phrase mode, and version 2.0 adds new features like Step Offset and increases the range to 6 octaves. Parameters like RATCHET and CHANCE will generate other semi-random rhythmic patterns to add life and spontaneity to your performance. Set how the beautiful long ribbon controller affects sounds with the ribbon button. Hold the chord button until it flashes, then press up to eight notes and trigger them from one key – much like some classic polysynths. The ribbon is a very nifty thing indeed and can act as an instrument in its own right. Play it like a theremin. Alternatively, assign it modulation duties or use it to bend held notes/chords.Build quality is flawless, sound quality is pristine and the light show from all the knobs and buttons coming on is a lovely touch.

The 12dB and 24dB ladder filters are smooth and effective; they're accompanied by bass-compensated versions (Fat12 and Fat24) that don't sacrifice their bottom end to high resonance. And while you're unlikely to mistake the MS20 filters for the real thing, they offer worthy alternate responses. I don't know how accurate the Threeler filters are, but I liked the band-pass mode in particular; some of its cutoff and resonance combinations give strange, buzzy but interesting results. The tone generation capability is the heart of any synthesizer, and the 3 Hydrasynth oscillators are alive with potential.

Modal’s latest board includes all the great features of the Argon 8 but with a 61-note keyboard. Features include 120 wavetables, 32 static wavetable modifiers, 32 high-resolution wavetable oscillators, eight types of oscillator modifier and four filter types.
