About this deal

View a summary of recoveries in the Online Ringing Report. Foreign locations of birds ringed or recovered in Britain & Ireland Encountered in: To be able to get a glimpse into the workings and existence of this fabulous and fascinating predictor was just breathtaking. This is a secretive bird that is harder to visualize and study just by its own behavior, habitat, and nature. I loved being able to take a glimpse into this complex and beautiful bird. He got to know which birds frequented each tree and what their alarm calls were. “You can work out what they are telling other birds in the wood. And if you can break that code, then they can actually inform you when there’s a predator around.”

Sunday book review – Goshawk Summer by James Aldred Sunday book review – Goshawk Summer by James Aldred

I have already read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it, learned more about Goshawks and other things. It has made me determined to visit the New Forest, somewhere I’ve never been nearer than a visit to the Dorset heaths. I actually see Goshawks fairly regularly it is one of THE birds here in Mid Wales and the nearest pair is about 1km from home. Even so they are not everyday birds and each sighting is exciting and special. Reading this book will add to anyone’s joy and appreciation of this “Phantom of the forest” and perhaps the life of a camera man. On the basis of this book I have bought the authors other offering to. I agree with Mark not a fan of the cover. This species can be found on the following statutory and conservation listings and schedules. UK Birds of Conservation Concern Goshawks are present year-round but recorded most often in late winter/early spring during spring aerial displays.Save Keith James 'Songs of Yusef - Cat Stevens' to your collection. Goshawk Summer: a New Forest Season Unlike Any Other Goshawk Summer: a New Forest Season Unlike Any Other

one thing you could say in favour of the cover is it might give a sense of how a goshawk’s prey might feel! Their reputation for taking gamebirds has led them to be the victim of widespread persecution (Petty 2002, Marquiss et al. 2003). This killing prevents the establishment of breeding birds in areas managed for gamebirds, but also such persistent removal of potential recruits restricts population spread into suitable habitats elsewhere in Scotland (Francis & Cook 2011). I think he had made a mistake in referring to the pandemic so often, and in particular to the health of the Prime Minister. Between the goshawk action we almost get a day by day update on Johnson’s recovery. It comes over as political, and totally unnecessary. This was something I found particularly off-putting.

James Aldred filmed a family of goshawks in the New Forest over the course of the summer in the middle of a global pandemic. As well as the goshawk nest, he also visits a fox den to film the cubs tumbling and play fighting, the lowland heath to spy the elusive Dartford Warbler and the valley mires to record the increasingly rare sight of curlews nesting. Passionate about wildlife of all types, his prose is beautiful and evocative:

The idea that pheasant shooting is less of a persecution problem than that of grouse is largely myth, plenty of them sadly are “at it.”

I just loved this book! I have a great fascination for raptors but my knowledge doesn't match my level of interest. By the end of this book I felt I knew more about the stunning goshawk but also about many of the other species living in the New Forest.
