In 1959 it was first exported to Venezuela, Costa Rica and other Central American countries.   Between 1963 and 1965 the distillery in Chichigalpa underwent modernization updates. Eight years later a second distillery was constructed in Honduras.  During the 1980s, Flor de Caña was stored in large quantities due to the Nicaraguan Revolution. When Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa left his native Italy for Nicaragua in 1875, rum wasn’t on his mind. You’d be searching for quite some time, however, before you found one with the pedigree of Flor de Caña. The 125-year-old Nicaraguan brand has carried its craft across five generations of family stewardship, amassing countless accolades along the way. Most recently, it was named 2017 Best Rum Producer of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London. Nose: Starts with rum raisins, mahogany and whiffs of diesel fumes. A sharp cloud of alcohol numbs the nose. Then developments of marzipan and modeling clay followed by orange soaked honey and a huge load of nuts such as macadamias, hazel and Brazil nuts. The smell is still sharp even after ten minutes.It’s a happy set of circumstances and it creates rich, complex rum. After building the distillery, it was not until 1937 that Flor de Caña was formally introduced to the Nicaraguan market, with Flor de Caña Etiqueta Amarilla and Flor de Caña Etiqueta Roja being the first two flavors. When it’s time for dessert, Melton enjoys busting out the elder aged liquid to celebrate its underlying depth.
