Baldacci is to be congratulated on how he sets up the story, creates three-dimensional characters, and layers seemingly unrelated situations one on top of the other until the resolution becomes startlingly clear. Fans of Baldacci’s 'memory man'character will be highly satisfied with Long Shadowsand anxiously await the next installment in the series." He had served justice in both cases, but it was, without doubt, a hollow outcome, marred by the fact that the justice was delivered too late for the victims. No amount of justice could return the dead to the living; the satisfaction gained from learning the truth was dwarfed by the loss. Why? Too much heat or too many old people? Or both?” “No, it’s because I’m just a lunch pail guy from the Midwest.” “Meaning?”One brother died by gunshot during a shootout with another gang, and one’s in prison until he’s an old man. My oldest brother is an attorney and works for the Public Defender’s Office in Boston. My sister has her own tech business and lives in Palo Alto in a house worth more than I will ever make in my life.”

White took this shot and fired off one of her own. “You know, you’re smaller than I would have thought.” He looked down at her. “I’m a wall, only not one you lean on.” “It’s just that Alex made you out to be nine feet tall and eight
For someone who writes these books with righteous people pursuing evil in the face of danger, Baldacci sneaks in some very modern sensibilities. Surely, they were already on their way there.

My only gripe with Baldacci's books is that there inevitably comes a point when they're over, and that he only publishes two of them a year. I always enjoy reading Baldacci, and this one was the best in a while among many excellent ones. He recited from memory, “‘As a person of color and a woman on top of that, I find it a necessity to my future well-being, and that of my family.’ ”He was a consultant with the FBI. Long before that he had suffered a near-fatal brain injury while playing professional football. His altered brain held two new attributes which, up to that point, he hadn’t even known about and had no reason to: hyperthymesia, or perfect recall; and synesthesia, which caused him to pair certain things with unlikely colors. In his case it was dead bodies linked with a shade of electric blue. After his football career ended he had become a policeman and then a detective in his hometown; thus, seeing dead bodies was not all that unusual. Great addition to this series AND can be read as a standalone — so jump on in! Th series is a favorite of mine. I recommended to several friends all continue reading it. (also me, at 6'6" has a soft spot for big athletic or tall characters that don’t fit easily or standout in situations!) Mary Lancaster, at least in her mind, could not have committed a graver sin than not remembering that her daughter existed. He was certain that was what had placed the finger on the trigger and given her the strength to pull it.
