Knicks fans have chance to own piece of NBA history featuring Willis Reed
Many legendary moments have taken place at Madison Square Garden, but one moment New York Knicks fans will always remember is Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals. Not only did the Knicks win their first championship after beating the Los Angeles Lakers, but this is also the game where the great Willis Reed proved his tenacity as a player.
This moment will always be remembered by New York fans and now they have a chance to own the warmup worn by Reed in Game 7. The warmup was put up for sale by Grey Flannel Auction and the starting bid is set at $10,000.
Fans do not have to worry about buying a fake because Grey Flannel Auction told TMZ that experts photo-matched the warmup to multiple images of Reed wearing the jackets to prove authenticity. If fans are interested in the warmup they should put in a bid because it is likely this piece will not be available for long.
Willis Reed embodies what it means to be a New York Knick
In Game 5 Reed suffered a muscle tear in his right thigh. He had missed Game 6 because of the injury and he was not expected to play in Game 7. But to everyone’s surprise, Reed limped onto the court and hit two jump shots. He only scored four points but his presence helped boost the confidence of his teammates and they went on to win the championship.
Game sevens are important in any playoff series, both teams are in a win-or-go-home situation. But losing a Game 7 in the NBA Finals most likely stings a little more than losing in the first round. Reed was injured but he was not going to let his team lose without him trying to play.
“That was for the championship, the one great moment you play for all your life. I didn’t want to have to look at myself in the mirror 20 years later and say I wished I had tried to play.”
This moment will forever be cemented in history and Reed will always be remembered as a Knicks great.
